West Point Grey was discovered
by Spanish explorers in 1791. In 1865, the first logging camp was
founded, and a few years later, a whaling station was set up. But
significant settlement did not occur until the late 1890’s,
with the establishment of the English Bay Canning Factory at the
north foot of Balaclava. The cannery’s success, though, was
its own downfall, and it was closed in 1905 as its buildings and
odour began to encroach on settlers’ homes.
In 1908, the Municipality of West Point Grey was established
and the newly elected Council moved quickly to improve access and
services to the area. In the first year of incorporation, water
service reached the area, construction began on the scenic Northwest
Marine Drive, and the Jericho Golf & Country Club opened. By
1909, a one-room schoolhouse had to be built for the area’s
24 children. It still exists, although now dwarfed by the much larger
Queen Mary School.
Despite the municipality’s investment in roads,
sewers and parks, however, development lagged. To spur new growth,
a tax was levied on all unimproved land. In 1912, $250,000 worth
of building permits were issued and the boom began! Commercial development
followed, and the streetcar line was extended to West 10th and Sasamat.
By 1924, 40 shops lined 10th Avenue between Tolmie and Discovery
Streets.
As Point Grey approaches its 100th Anniversary, West
10th Avenue is still the commercial centre of this beautiful neighbourhood.
Yet even now, with over 130 shops and services to choose from, The
Village still maintains a small town feel. You’ll find several
well-established, long time businesses. And shopkeepers that can
tell you tales about the many changes they have endured over the
years! You will also discover some new shops and services, eager
to be a part of the community, and to be a part of our neighbourhood’s
future.
There is no doubt that things will continue to grow
and change on West 10th Avenue. But rest assured that you will always
find a friendly face behind the counter and you will never be made
to feel anything but welcome!
We invite you to Shop the Village! Hope to
see you soon!
